Keep your
canoe under control. Control must be good enough at all
times to stop or reach shore. If you don't have control, you may
put yourself and your fellow canoe mates in danger.
Before going on
a canoeing trip, assess your canoeing ability. If you
feel as though you need some practice, get some still flatwater
lessons, or just spend some time in a canoe before your
trip. TIP: On the
Breslau Trip, you may use the practice ponds at Kolb Park,
before setting out down the river. You (and a friend) can carry
your canoe to/from the practice pond to the river.
Enter into
situations according to your abilities. Make sure you are
honest with yourself. For instance, don't enter an area of
fast current unless you feel sure you can safely paddle through.
In faster moving water be sure to keep your canoe facing down
stream not cross stream and you will be less likely to tip
if striking a rock or change in water flow. Practice controlling
the direction of the canoe using your paddle as a rudder.
You will be
sharing the Grand River with fishermen. Respect fishermen and
anglers. Paddle your canoe to the shore opposite of their
lines and pass by quietly.
The vast majority of the trips Canoeing the Grand offers are
very safe for paddlers of all skill levels and feature flat
moving water.
